I’ve
been working with Kelvin since the fall of 2000 when my company hired him on to
work nights. He has a technical background, as do I, and has been working with
a variety of computer systems such as mainframes and the AS/400. He has his own
business on the side and has a determination to succeed in everything he does.
Buying a new house and a new Mercedes is testament to that…even though his wife
wrecked the car.
Unlike
what seems to be a majority of blacks in this country, he’s not all uptight about every single thing concerning
race. He doesn’t have a chip on his shoulder because 150 years ago, my
ancestors may have owned some of his. He doesn’t start a scene because he
thinks an evil white cop is looking at him the wrong way. Any time that Al Sharpton or Jesse Jackson makes the news for being a race baiting poverty pimp
or fostering a "Love Child", we have good spirited conversations about
how sad it is that these are the two people that the “black community” look up
to. I think it would be embarrassing to have these two as my presumed leaders.
I think Dr King himself would be embarrassed to have these two by his side, were
he still alive.
He is quite the tolerant guy to work with, especially since I sometimes subject him to my music. I don’t want to scare him off, so I avoid playing some of my more extreme listening choices. But if we’re working together, I’ll bring in some of my more melodic metal CD’s like Dream Theater, Sonata Arctica, or Rush.
We’re both Republicans. We both enjoy ribbing a fellow employee because she believes every conspiracy theory that comes down the pike concerning President Bush. We both like quality adult beverages like Samuel Adams and Guinness. We both like grilling dead animals. We both like big-ass guns. We both like our jobs, even though our company thinks we should be Accountants and Medicare Billing Specialists….*ahem ahem*. And finally we both agree that our workplace has a shitty selection of music to listen to (ie: lots of soft rock chick music)…which is why we bring our own.
