Mike

MikeI’ve known Mike for at least 10 years.  I don’t exactly recall when and where we met, but I’m sure it involved Cornerstone Festival somehow.  He used to sport a Mohawk and purple Chuck Taylors, and even though your average person would laugh at someone that looked like that, they would be most hesitant at doing so to a 400+ pound Mexican!!  A funny phrase we like to use around him is “Samoans Rule!”.  One night he went to a bar wearing a Hawaiian shirt and some drunk thought he was Samoan because well, gee, he’s a large, brown guy wearing a Hawaiian shirt…he MUST be a Samoan.  Dumbass.  He is a shrinking man though.  In the past year, he’s lost over 80 pounds doing the Atkins Diet.

MikeBack in early 1996, he introduced me to one of Mexico’s finest exports: Negra Modelo Dark Ale.  You can have your little pussy Corona or Tecate beers.  Just gimme some Negra Modelo WITHOUT a fucking lime in it!  He has also gotten me into some fine Mexican tequila (as opposed to German tequila).  And I’m not talking about that Jose Cuervo shit, which is only good for making margaritas…because it’s cheap and the mix drowns out the taste.  I’m talking about Tres Generaciones and Corralejo.  He also told me about a popular Mexican brandy called Presidente.  I found that a bit odd at first, because when I think of brandy, I certainly don’t think of Mexico.

Enough with the adult beverages, lets get on to Mike’s culinary skills.  I always look forward to any event where his food is being served.  He loves to cook and when he comes over to my place,  I’m more than happy to supply the stove/grill/oven to accommodate his passion.  Some of his foodstuffs that stands out is the smoked brisket, his rice, mole (not the yard eating rodent), and  Pollo a la Parrilla (grilled chicken, but it sounds cooler in Spanish...hehe).  I also don’t have to buy salsa, as he whips a killer batch himself, and suited to my hot tastes.

He’s also a self-proclaimed expert on early 80’s new wave music and can name a good majority of the bands and songs on DirecTV’s Channel 814, the New Wave Music Channel.   Well, he says he just got lucky one night and could name all sorts of obscure bands that the station played.  Maybe he's just more of a self-proclaimed uber-amateur.
