Tattoo FAQ's

On this page, I hope to answer some questions that I always get regarding tattoos.

Does it hurt to get a tattoo?
It's not painless, but at the same time it's not so bad that you can't take it.  My best analogy is it's like lighting a match, blow it out and drag the tip across your skin.  It kind of burns, but nothing major.  It's like when you take a hot bath.  Sure it's a bit uncomfortable at first, but you get used to it.  Take your bare foot and kick a brick wall...that will hurt worse than a getting a tattoo.  Once you're already inked, now comes the fun part.  The next couple days, it will feel like a bad sunburn.  It's tender to the touch, which is inevitable since you have to wash it three or four times a day and apply Neosporin in order to prevent infection and help the "scar" heal.  About a week later, the tattoo will start to flake off...again, like a sunburn.  DO NOT PEEL IT OFF!!!  Just continue to wash it and apply the Neosporin, although at this stage I prefer to use skin moisturizer so that it doesn't itch as much.  The bottom line, if you're concerned about how much it's going to hurt, you probably don't need to be getting tattooed to begin with.

Does being tattooed prevent you from getting a good job?
I haven't had any trouble receiving gainful employment even after being tattooed more than the average person.  I work in the IT sector (see Jobs link), and when I have job interviews, I wear a long sleeve shirt and tie.  Unless some of my artwork extends beyond the cuff, they don't even know I have tattoos.  I make decent money and have earned the respect of my peers.  Eventually, they'll know that I have tattoos, but that's after the fact.  In a corporate environment such as that in which I presently work in, openly displayed tattoos can be a detriment.  It all depends on your work environment.  If you work in a warehouse, it's probably not as big of a deal if people see them.  If you're a consultant or in Sales, and are meeting with CEO's and such, you'll probably be wise to cover up your tattoos due to the discrimination factor described above.  Just because you have tattoos, don't expect everyone to appreciate them as much as you do.

Do you have any body piercings?
Nope.  I've never had an ear ring, nose ring, nipple ring, eyebrow ring, lip ring, navel ring or anything like that.  Like I've mentioned before, if you have the unstoppable urge to drive a nail through your dick, then by all means go nuts (no pun intended...).  A little side note though, I do like women with pierced tongues...they're fun to play with .
